Florida's top specialty license plates a nod to ocean, wildlife

Florida residents have more than 100 options when it comes to specialty license plates for their cars.

Drivers can tout their alma mater or favorite sports team. Others may opt for something military-related, in a nod to the troops or their own service.

There also are myriad environmental and special interest plates.

And as of Tuesday, over 2,086,100 vehicles were sporting a specialty plate; a decade ago that number was 1,401,278.

These are the top-selling plates, according to the latest data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles:

Proceeds from the Endless Summer plate, which costs $25 annually, benefit Surfing's Evolution & Preservation Foundation.

The nonprofit supports partner organizations that focus on shoreline eco-system preservation, cleaning and enhancing beaches and public education programs.

Four of the other best-selling plates in Florida go toward protecting a few of the state's aquatic iconic animals and their habitats.
