TACOMA, Wash. — In her upstairs study Hana Gutierrez may look like she's all alone, but thanks to a vivid imagination she is anything but.
"I've always loved animals," Gutierrez said. "Cute bunnies. There are a lot of plants and flowers."
The Charles Wright Academy student is using Procreate to create stickers that are simple and simply irresistible. Especially to her friends.
"If you go to my school, they have all my stickers plastered all over laptops and journals," Gutierrez said.
During the pandemic her father, Robert Gutierrez, saw a transformation in his community. And in Hana.
"We started to see a lot of the people in the community out on the street," Robert said. "A lot more homelessness. People who just looked hungry. I think that's really what got her starting to think about what could she do."
Gutierrez had already made stickers fighting racial hate and supporting Ukrainian refugees. In November of 2022 she reached out to Northwest Harvest.
"They hold a really special place in my heart," Gutierrez said. "They are a local organization and they are specific to Washington State."
In brainstorming sessions that could go on for hours Gutierrez and the folks from Northwest Harvest came up with five distinctive stickers Hana sells from her Etsy shop. Every nickel, dime and dollar go to Northwest Harvest, and it's adding up.
"I'm getting lots of love and support, and I am really grateful for that," Gutierrez said.
"We are overjoyed with just seeing how she has blossomed into this person who is very caring about her community," Robert Gutierrez said.
Like the heroes of her favorite books, Hana Gutierrez shows us that with a little pluck and a lot of imagination, the smallest things can be used to take on the world's biggest challenges.
